I used to have a summer job in a petting zoo of sorts, and one of my favorite tasks each year was coming up with perfect names for all the animals.  I called the donkeys Alexander and Napoleon.  The baby rabbit that kept escaping the hutch was Houdini.  I named a goat Mrs. Butler after my high school global studies teacher, and another little goat with a triangle on his head was Bandit – it looked like he was wearing a bandana.

And we had these two crested chickens at one point that I named Elvis and George Washington – Elvis’s puff tipped forward over his eyes, and George Washington’s tipped back.

Have you ever seen an animal with a wacky hairdo?  Here are some of my favorites.

  1. Polish crested chicken – I know feather headbands are in, but this is taking the trend to a bit of an extreme…
  2. Komondor – this Hungarian herd dog bears an astonishing resemblance to a haystack.
  3. Highland cattle – Scottish cows are small and strong – and stylish, with those side-swept bangs, don’t you think?
  4. Emperor tamarin – this little monkey has the neatest facial hair I’ve ever seen.
  5. Texel guinea pig – a cute little rodent that was the victim of an unfortunate perm.
  6. East African crested crane – I bet you didn’t think a Mohawk could look dignified!
  7. Sphynx cat – ok, this one doesn’t really have any hair, but that’s what makes it weird.  Personally, I think these cats look like they’ll suck out your soul, but I know at least one person who would have one as a pet if I let her.  As with hairstyles, so with pets – to each her own!
