Why Shawls Are Fabulous – Especially in Springtime
by aviva
I know it’s late April, and we’re getting past the season for outerwear. (Well, we’re supposed to be – I have it on good authority that it snowed yesterday in upstate New York!) But anyhow, I think shawls are awesome, and they’re actually really handy right now. A lightweight shawl is easy to stuff into your bag or carry around just in case you need a layer.
I also take one with me when it’s windy and I don’t want my hair to get blown into a wild tangle. My brother got married on the beach, and my sister-in-law had the forethought to provide a stack of pashminas for all the guests, to ward off the chill. She saved my hair! And if you’re in the habit of wearing all black, this is an easy, painless way to incorporate some color into your look.
Did you know that the word “pashmina” originally referred to the wool of a certain type of goat from the Kashmir region in northern India? Nowadays, we use the word to refer to pretty much any shawl that is made with cashmere, because it has come to mean the style as much as the material. Even more special is a shawl made from shahtoosh – that’s antelope down that is so fine that a whole shawl can be pulled through a wedding ring. But the antelopes they’re made from are endangered; it’s actually illegal to buy one!
Personally, I’m thrilled with something like the Solid Pashmina Shawl: I have several in different colors so I can coordinate with whatever I’m wearing.
JUST ADDED!

Shawls are especially fabulous in spring/summertime because other people like to keep buildings (especially church buildings) freezing cold! I often sit through a sermon so uncomfortable that I can’t concentrate on what the preacher is saying (unless he mentions that it’s hot and wants someone to turn the air up and then I’m plunged even deeper … See moreinto misery) because it’s so cold! A regular jacket doesn’t go with a Sunday dress (and looks really funny when it’s 100 degrees outside). A shawl would be PERFECT!
So true. IT would be nice to find some shawls that arent made of wool
I have two that I absolutely love! I didn’t purchase them from you because at the time I didn’t know your site existed, but I love that you off many colors! I have a white one and royal blue one. I use them on Sunday’s, with my low body temp they come in real handy!
I am in the process of losing a lot of baby weight. I love that shawls are somthing that can cover clothes that dont quite fit and it will still fit when I have lost the weight.
Good point, Abigail. Synagogues are often just as bad!
I never even considered shawls for me (we have a few for the kids), but I think carrying one around this time of year is a great idea. Just the other day, after weather that was consistently in the 80s, we had an unexpected cool day and I found myself shivering at the park while the kids played. A shawl would have been perfect.
what great colors! I love shawls. easy to carry for when it cools down at night or when a restaurant has ac on too high
