Why Do You Cover Your Head?
by aviva
What are you doing here?
By which I mean, what brings you to a website and a blog about hair covering?
Last year, Coveryourhair.com polled Facebook fans, asking why they wear headcoverings. The results: 18% of responders said that they love to look good, 79% cover their head/hair for religious reasons, and 4% aren’t sure. No one involved in the poll answered that they cover for medical reasons, but it was a possibility.
Lots of people know that Muslim women have religious reasons to cover their hair; fewer people may realize that married Orthodox Jewish women cover too, albeit in a different style. As a matter of fact, some Christian and pagan women dotoo – so it’s not surprising that so many responders cited religion as their main motivation. In the Sikh religion, men are required to cover their hair as well as women. In addition, some people never cut their hair, because of religious beliefs.
The official medical term for hair loss is alopecia; most people think of it as a result of chemotherapy treatment for cancer, but there are several other medical reasons for either temporary or permanent hair loss. Try to relax – major life stress can cause it!
Other reasons to wear a headcovering?
- To keep warm
- To shade your face from the sun
- To keep hair from getting windblown, or in the way
- As part of a uniform – ie: police officers
- Ever picked a hair out of your food? Ick!
What else can you think of?
JUST ADDED!

I cover for religious reasons. I am not an Orthodox Jew but I do cover on Shabbat, or at other religious occasions. I have found that I have started doing it more and more on an everyday basis as it becomes more comfortable for me.
Interesting poll results. Other reasons: protection against insects such as ticks while gardening or berry picking, protection from heat by tying a wet bandanna or scarf over the head.
I like to wear caps to protect my hair from the suns rays. It damages my hair (which is very fine and thin) and protects the color from getting brassy.
I also cover my hair to keep the wind from blowing it (especially at my son’s baseball games). i would love to win one of your feminie caps instead of having to wear a baseball cap.
I mainly cover for religious reasons – Bible believing Christian. But, I admit, it is great for keeping my hair off my face too. We also believe it’s a sign of modesty and respect toward her husband for a woman to cover her head.
I cover mainly for religious reasons. I am Pagan, and head-covering is part of my personal dedication on my path to becoming an ordained clergy person. It helps keep me focused on my spiritual development and the work I need to do. As an added bonus it keeps my grabby 5 month-old from yanking my hair!
Religious reasons. I a modern orthodox Jew and cover my hair in mixed company.
I seldom cover my hair; however, my oldest daughter (age 28) covers her hair frequently–most often with a bandana. I believe she started doing this because of extreme dry scalp. I think she was embarrassed and trying to hide. Turns out, it is a great look for her–so she does it often.
I also cover for religious reasons…and I have come to love it….I don’t have to worry about what my hair looks like….or if it gets messed up in the wind. I also love all the beautiful options for haircoverings that Cover Your Hair and other sites like it offer.
I cover my hair when I am going out on a windy day …
I cover because vanity is a downfall and I want to be focused solely on G*d alone when I am in church worshipping, as in NOT my will but G*d’s will be done.
I cover my hair for religious reasons. I am an orthodox jew and Iove to dress up my wigs with bands, bandana’s and caps. I also like to wear pre-tied bandanas at home.
I cover for religious reasons
Hello
I cover for religious reasons having to do with headship and submission.
I cover because it’s an ordinance from the Lord in 1 Corinthians chapter 11 of the Holy Bible. He desires to “set apart” the godly for himself (Psalm 4:3).
I cover to keep the sun off my head and face. Also, nothing better for a bad hair day. Lots of information on the blog, thanks for sharing
My hair is very long, wavy & unruly. If I want to look neat and not have hair flying into my face, I put on a head covering of some kind. I’ve loved hats since I was a child and to me they’re the perfect way to complete an outfit.
As a Christian(Gentile) it’s taken me 17 years to accept the fact that God wants Christian women to cover their heads. I use to think that by covering one’s head meant also covering the face. And I was glad to be proven wrong! But still I personally fought against this and chose not to because I thought well why should I? My hair is a covering, Jesus Christ freed us from such things, etc. But after spending several months studying scripture and praying it dawned on me that I shouldn’t wait to be convicted to cover my head, the Lord has said it should be so and therefore I should do it out of obedience to Him.(1 Corinthians 11)I don’t belong to any group, coven, or church that requires the women to cover their heads. In fact, I am the only woman at my Church that covers her head. I’ve been quietly approached by some elderly women and after explaining it to them and showing them the scripture reference they found it to be amazing that I came to this conclusion on my own. One of the ladies had been part of a Plymouth Group and left after a couple of decades, she admires me for having done this on my own accord.
I love the freedom that comes with covering my head, and I even sleep with a head covering on. It’s helped change my dreams, for years I was plagued with nightmares. I would pray every night without fail for protection from them, to basically not have them. And when I started covering at night coupled with prayers they stopped. Even my six year old son who was prone to night terrors hasn’t had one since I started covering at night. I give God all the glory for this!
I cover for spiritual/religious reasons. I’m a Pagan, and have found over time that covering keeps me focused on what is important in my life – my spiritual path. I don’t cover all the time (work is a notable exception, where more temporal matters must come first), but as soon as I’m home the tichel or other covering goes on. The sense of peace and “right-ness” that I get when I cover is amazing.
I’m part of the 79% covering for religious reasons … (Orthodox Jew)
I am part Jewish nd cover my hair sometimes for that reason. It gives me a feeling of honor and respect that I have something nobody can see but my husband! Besides, you guys have the cuest styles!
I have very fair skin. Being in the sun means I easily burn my scalp without covering it. Brushing my hair if it has a burn is painful !
I’m a married, Orthodox Jewish woman so I cover for religious reasons when out of the house or in mixed company. In addition to following halacha, I know my husband thinks headcoverings are very feminine, so they enhance my attractiveness to my husband.
I cover my hair for religious reasons, but find that it’s a great way to accessorize as well.
I cover for religious reasons, certainly not by choice. I’ll admit that at times covering my hair is more convenient than having to make sure that it looks good to go out, but I generally am not happy about the idea.
I also cover for religious reasons
I wear a covering daily mostly for religious reasons [Orthodox Christian]. Snoods, tichels, and bandannas are my favorite choices.
I cover my hair for religious reasons, but have covered my head during chemotherapy in the past. I found after I became used to not having hair I was proud to show off my bald head, unfortunately a few bad sun scalp burns took the fun out of that!
Whenever I have a bad hair day I like to wear a bandana or if I am hiking I think it helps keep tick and other bugs away. gross but true lol
As I become more observant during my conversion to Judaism, I find myself wanting to cover my hair because it helps me concentrate on my spirituality and to focus on modesty and inner beauty.
i tweeeeted!!!

I cover on bad hair days with a pretty wrap or I wrap it to get it straight and cover the whole thing.
When I am gardening, on windy days, when I don’t have time to “DO” my hair
٩(-̮̮̃-)۶ and to just look GREAT! (~_~)
i started to wear a headcovering because i felt in my heart that this is what i am suppose to do.
I cover for a few reasons – One, I like how it looks. Two, I have lost a lot of hair on my head due to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Since treating my condition it has yet to grow back in. On top of that I am a religious Jew, and although I’m not yet married, I think that hair-covering is an expression of modesty and self-respect.
With 3 daughters that love head coverings I am always looking for new ideas
Hello? Bad Hair Day anyone???!!!
Now that I am married, I cover my hair for religious reasons, but before then, hats were a major help when I just couldnt bring myself to blow dry! I also have a friend who used to cover her hair before she was married when she needed to go into a certian library at a Jewish mens college so that the guys there would think she was married and leaver her alone to do her studing!!! Thats my favorite reason!
I cover for various reasons, but I don’t cover all the time. My reasons are:
1. To keep my hair out of my face.
2. To keep my head warm during winter months.
3. Religious reasons.
It’s stylish!That’s why
I also cover for religious reasons
I cover mainly for religious reasons as well! I believe that God’s Word should come before modern culture, although most modern Christians disagree… But now that I have a baby, I am more likely to have my head covered when at home and alone, as well, because it helps keep my little guy from grabbing handfuls of my hair!
As a married Orthodox Jewish woman, I cover my hair for religious reasons. To be honest, I used to hate it and viewed as a real pain especially since I loved my (now vitamin D deprived) hair. I have come to appreciate what I once saw as a limiting obligation and now have fun wearing different style wigs and hats/bands with my fall!
I am a modern orthodox Jew and cover my hair for religious reasons, but it doesn’t bother me that it keeps me from ever having “bad hair” days!
I am just about to begin covering my head on a regular basis, primarily for physical comfort reasons, with a small religious component. I tried on a bandana the other day just to see what it felt like to wear it, and was surprised to discover that I really like how it keeps stray hair out of my face, and have decided that I like it so much that I’m going to wear one on a regular basis. I wouldn’t say that my religion (Eastern Orthodox Christian) requires women to cover their heads – at least in modern North America, it’s quite uncommon that women cover their heads outside church and I’ve never seen it expected of them; inside church it varies between local congregations, but is not expected at mine. However, across times and places, it has been usual for Eastern Orthodox women to cover their heads, and it seems like a good thing to do. But that wouldn’t have persuaded me before I discovered that I like how it feels.
I cover my hair for several reason. I like the style and look that it creates with matching it to whatever I am wearing for the day. I also like that it is comfortable to wear unlike other hair accessories that can pull and tug hurting my scalp and also giving headaches. Plus it is great when you are having a bad hair day. With head coverings you never have a bad hair day.
I’ve rediscovered the old tradition(small _t_) of covering my head for Mass, especially when I find a veil that looks very pretty. I also find that I concentrate more on my prayers during worship, as long as I’m not riding herd on my kids at the same time.
I also wear a hat for my job, as I work outside at the the largest employer in my area. Straw hats are great for the summer, except if you’re standing under the windiest spot in a particular park. Ski bands are better for winter, btw.
Pax.
religious reason if im having a bad hair day and to accessorize
They are great on bad hair days, too!
I cover my head for religious reasons as well. I started covering at the age of 20, outdoors and in mixed situation, and still do so everyday. It is part of living a modest life. And this way I’m being judged by character and inner beauty instead of just by looks, which I see as a big bonus!
I cover for various reasons. I feel that it is proper for religious reasons.
Also for medical, i too have thyroiditis and it has gotten quite thin. I am Catholic and thought it might be a distraction in church but no one pays any attention.I love my head coverings
I also cover for religious reasons. My husband is a Hebrew Roots Teacher. I have only recently started and have ordered many things from your website! Love your products!!I have done a lot of research over the past few years on being a Proverbs 31 and Titus 2 wife and part of that is submission and modesty. Part of submission and modesty is covering.
