shampooLet’s face it.  There are times when your hair gets dirty, and you don’t have the time or ability to get it clean. You’re camping, and the nearest shower is on the other side of the mountain.  Your kids are sick and the plumber is coming by to fix the stopped-up bathtub drain.  A bird dropped one on your head on the way to work…

What do you do?

Well, in that last example, you run to the bathroom and scrub with hand soap and a handful of paper towels.  But if that’s not an option, here are some other ways to deal with dirty hair that won’t leave you looking like a hobo.

  1. Baby powder works wonders on greasy hair – just sprinkle it on your roots, rub it in, and brush it out.  This is great when you’re not in a position to shampoo.  Apparently, oatmeal, baking soda, and cornstarch also work for this purpose.  And there are powder shampoos that you can try, but I’ve never used them so I can’t recommend any particular brands.
  2. If it’s long enough, tie it up – use clips or ponytail holders, but don’t pull it too tight because that will make greasy roots show more.  Pick a style that’s loose, but out of your face – a low ponytail, or the sides pinned back.
  3. If your hair is short, slick it back with a pomade so that it looks wet, as opposed to dirty.
  4. If you have time to blow dry, flip your head upside-down and blow the roots for 3 minutes – this will add volume.
  5. Cover it up – a bandana, a wide headband, a pretty scarf if you need to look nice.  The less that people can see, the better.
  6. Pick some unusually funky earrings to wear that will distract people from the ick on top of your head.
