suitcase with hatIf you’re not already planning a summer trip, get cracking.  Good weather is not to be wasted at work or doodling around the house!

That being said, packing for a vacation can be pretty nerve-wracking.  It’s hard to come up with all the possible combinations of clothing that you’ll need, and hardly anyone always brings all the right stuff.  When it comes to accessories, it’s even worse; you don’t want to schlep piles of small items that are easy to lose, but you don’t want to end up forgetting something that will be genuinely useful.  It’s a fine line to walk.

This is how I see it.  Better to bring simple clothing that can be dressed up or down, or adjusted for the occasion, with a change of accessories.  An assortment of tichels or headbands takes up less space in your suitcase than an assortment of tops.  A black shirt and a denim skirt/pants can be fun and sporty with a baseball cap, or stylish with a nicely-tied scarf and dangly earrings.  It’s all in how you spin it.

Here are some must-brings to consider for summer trips, whether you’re going on a cruise, a camping trip, or just hitting a state fair.

Sun hat - Um, it’s summer.  All you need is a smidge of common sense these days to know how important sun protection is.  A floppy straw number is perfect for poolside, while hikers may prefer a cotton bucket hat.  If you’re spending the day browsing the shops at your destination, try a trendy cap.

Colorful fun item for nights out - After a day of sun and surf (or mud and dirt and sweat, or whatever), sometimes it’s nice to get a little dressed up.  It makes you feel like a woman again.  So make sure you have a nice sparkly scarf or some jeweled hair clips, or a pretty flower to tuck behind your ear.  You don’t want to walk into a nice restaurant or a concert looking like you spent the day in bed!

Bandana – There are so many scenarios where a bandana or wide headband would be worthwhile while you’re on a trip.  Bad hair day, and you left your favorite styling product at home?  The showers at the pool/beach were malfunctioning, so your hair is full of chlorine/salt water?  Spent a few hours sweating through a game of tennis or on a nature trail?  Trust me, you’ll be glad you tucked that cute kerchief into your bag.

What items do you make sure to bring when you go away during the summertime?
