Wedding Hairstyles: Up or Down?

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

bride updoOne of the first things you notice about a bride is her hairstyle.  One of the big things a bride has to decide is how to wear her hair!  What kind of veil, and which hairpiece are only a part of that decision.  The hairstyle itself is a big deal.  Whether you want to go up or down, classic or contemporary – there’s a lot to consider.

First off, think about your dress, your veil/headpiece (if you’ve already chosen it), and the overall style and vibe of your wedding.  Your personal taste – and comfort – count as well.  If you’re getting married out of doors on a hot summer day, (more…)

The Freakiest Royal Wedding Hats

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Royal Wedding HatsOk, I know we just did a blog post of crazy runway styles, but I can’t let a British royal wedding go by without pointing out some of the real screamers.  For Americans, the wedding-hat thing is pretty strange because it’s not the fashion in the US.  The idea of wearing one at all comes from the fact that until relatively recently, weddings pretty much always took place in churches, and people were expected to cover their heads in church.  Even though some churches have more relaxed rules now, and people are getting married in other venues, the connection between hats and weddings still lingers.  It remains to be seen whether all the hoopla will inspire a wedding hat trend outside the UK. Tis the Season…All About Wedding Veils

Sunday, April 3rd, 2011

wedding veilSpring is finally here!  Which of course means ’tis the season for weddings.  And without a doubt, the most important and noticeable accessory at most weddings is The Veil.  Rings are more expensive, shoes can make or break your dance moves, the bouquet totally counts as an accessory – but the veil is on the bride’s head!  Assuming that people are looking at her face and not…elsewhere…the veil (ok, and the headpiece) are going to be what everyone sees the most.  And, perhaps ironically, I bet the veil itself is the accessory that the bride spends the least time choosing.

There are in fact many different styles of veil, suitable for different types of dresses and events.  Here’s a rundown of the options.

  • Cathedral – think Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music.  A loooooooooong veil to go with a loooooooooong train.   (more…)

Hair Accessories for Special Occasions

Friday, August 20th, 2010

You’re going out for the night.  To a wedding, a party, the theater.  You’ve got the perfect dress, awesome shoes, and a new pair of earrings.  But what about your hair?

Sure, you can always just blow it out, straighten it, flip the ends up a little.  Let your curls down for once.  But when the sun beats down during the outdoor ceremony, will you wish you had put it up off your neck?  Will you yearn for the bride’s elegant updo? Or when the dancing starts will you suddenly discover just how sticky your lipstick is – because your hair keeps blowing onto your mouth?  Maybe you’ll realize that a plain black dress (hee hee) looks awesome – but also kind of boring.

There’s an answer to all of these questions.  Elegant hair accessories are easy to find, easy to coordinate with your outfit, and just might make you more comfortable – plus, you’ll look even more put-together than you already do.  Here are some ideas for dressing up your do for special occasions.

I Feel Like Blogging About…Weddings

Weddings are an excellent time to discover what’s new in the world of accessories.  And I don’t just mean people-watching.  Everyone has realized the day of an event that they left their necklace at home, or they took the wrong shoes, or the bride’s veil has been eaten by her puppy.  Stuff like that.  And when you’re rushing to the mall to fill in a last-minute gap in your wardrobe, you don’t take the time to shop around; you grab what’s on display at the front of the first store you go into and run.

My cousin got married this week, and my mother had a new black (!) dress that needed some blinging up.   (more…)
