When I sat down to write this post, I felt like talking about cookies.  I really like cookies.  But of course, they have nothing to do with accessories, unless you wear one pinned to your hat or something.  But then I started thinking, and rather impressed myself with my own cleverness.  Warning: horribly mixed metaphors ahead!

Baking cookies can be a lot like getting dressed.  You have your basic staple recipes, like oatmeal raisin or chocolate chip.  You know these will always look (I mean taste) good; they always come out the same every time.  They’re totally reliable, and pretty much everyone likes them.

But sometimes you want to shake things up a little.  Semisweet chocolate gets a little tedious (not unlike black v-neck shirts).  Oatmeal raisin seems a little too healthy, and not enough decadent (nude control-top pantyhose, anyone?).  So you pull out something really wild, something you bought on a whim while on vacation in a foreign cookbook.  Your fig-rosewater-mocha-glazed-macaroons might look fabulous, and even taste good – but people are going to look at them funny, and might not actually want to try one.

This is where my personal style comes in – both for clothing, and for cookies.  I take an ordinary recipe – or an ordinary outfit – and change it up a little.  My white-chocolate-chip-craisin cookies are semi-famous in my neighborhood.  Or I do orange extract instead of vanilla.  Or I add coconut, macadamia nuts, and chocolate chips to oatmeal raisin cookies.  This is kind of like wearing an orange and turquoise paisley tichel with a plain brown dress.  Or a red polka dot belt over a white button-down and a black skirt.  It’s easy to do, doesn’t take much extra effort, and looks (tastes!) fabulous.  And it’s different.  It’s nice to shake things up on a regular basis, don’t you think?
