How to Find a Hat that Fits Your Face
by aviva
Have you ever gone into a store, spied a really cute hat in exactly the color you wanted, and run to try it on – only to find that it made you look like an idiot? Trust me, I’ve had that experience, and I’m willing to bet that most of you have as well.
It turns out that there’s an art to choosing a hat that will flatter you, and it has a lot to do with the shape of your face. Once again, my googling fingers have worked their magic and found the following sage advice for hat shoppers everywhere.
- If you’ve got a round face, and want to make your head look a little less spherical, try something with a high crown and a squarish or angular shape. Try something like our Stylish Pink Hat or Soft Classy Winter Hat for a lengthening effect
- For a longer face, you want something with a wide brim, but a lower crown – something like our Fashionable Black Hat. A floppy beret (like our Tie Dye style) will also work well.
- A heart-shaped face (wide at the top, narrow at the bottom) looks best under a hat with a medium or no brim – a wide brim will make you look even pointier. Get a Soft Pull-On Hat or an Everyday Wool Beret in whatever color you like best!
- If your jaw is wide and square, you want to smooth it out a bit by wearing a hat with soft, rounded edges, and a higher crown: how ‘bout a Flower Cap, or a Cable Chaponne?
- Those will oval shaped faces are lucky ducks: just about any hat will look good on you, since there’s nothing you really need to play up or down. Our Black and White Cap is cute – and so is our Cute Pull On.
Two other things to keep in mind, when attempting to find a hat that will be flattering, are your coloring, and your general size: larger women can pull off large, dramatic hats, while more petite ladies may look best in something smaller.
JUST ADDED!

yes they are cute
I love hats and I’m one of those lucky people with an oval face, the only thing is that once I’ve put the hat on I HAVE to keep it on or I’ve got hat hair!
I’m lucky – I have an oval face and most hats look good on me. WHen I lived in NYC I wore a lot more hats than I do now that I live in the burbs.
Agreed- hats are so difficult to find as most of them just look silly on me. Thanks for posting!
Yup you were describing me, though I hate to say I looked like and idiot lol. I’ll say less than flattering….much less haha.
Still not sure I could pull off wearing a hat (even with your recommendations). However, I’m the mom of three girls (ages 15, 26, 28) who all wear hats well.
I haven’t been wearing hats because so far I didn’t really find a good one for everyday.Your suggestions are really cute though!:)

Too bad I just made a whole new account and I don’t have any followers.
thanks to this REALLY helpful, informative article I’m now convinced that my sister’s an oval-faced ‘hat person’– she looks good in any hat she tries on; not so much can be said for me… but it’s all good!
I know exactly what this is like…I used to NEVER, EVER wear hats…the occasional baseball cap for summer outdoor trips, but that’s about it (until I got married..).
I have a round face, so I usually avoid hats and opt for veils or scarves…but these are cute hates ☺
I dont seem to look good in hats, but love snoods
This is very helpful- thanks!
I love to wear hats. Thanks for the wonderful information!
I have retweeted the contest @ http://twitter.com/bitsybitsybitsy
I love hats, and I buy them thinking that I will wear them, and then when I put them on, I always look ridiculous.
Thanx for the article!
I love hate, but sometimes they make me feel fat. Is that weird?
xoxoxo
PS I meant hats not hate. I don’t love hate.
xoxoxo
So what about those of us with small, square heads??? Most adult size hats end up sitting on my nose. Granted, it is a grand foundation for a hat, but I can’t see so well that way.
Thank you for this! It was very helpful
Thank you for the information on what hats look good with different face shapes. I always have a hard time with hats. I love the Flower Cap!
Good article. I love hats but do have trouble finding ones that work well for me. However, I do have a good \hat face\ and have 3 that I rotate that look great. I’m always looking for new ones, though!
I would wear a cute-pull-on for sure!
Hats are fun and great to keep the sun off.
Thanks for the info.
thanks! all your hats are cute!
personaly i think berets are the most versatile for all face shapes:)

Hats look darling on me…but my head is very large, as in, my dad and I have the same measurement! So I either have to specialty order in larger sizes or wear stretchy knit styles.

This is a very good article. I love wearing hats, but this will make it easier to figure out if it’s flattering before I bother trying it on.
