Because mom has been there all your life having taken care of you since day one, you learn almost everything that you know from her. That includes household chores, how to do the dishes, laundry (why whites have to be separated from colored), cooking and even shopping for groceries and what exactly to buy. Most likely, of course, mom also taught you the basics of dressing up and the use of accessories from fashion to hair.
It could have started with watching her do her hair with simple tricks using teasing combs and a little tucking of strands here and there using hair pins. I used to watch in awe how my own mother would do her hair in a jiffy with the magic that hair pins can do. I am sure, just like me, you also learned the art of using them and may have even invented a few new tricks of your own to come up with a unique hair style. (more…)

To most of those living in countries where winter months mean the coldest of cold season, it is often met with excitement. Why? Because it signals the time to bring out your winter wears from head to foot out of the closet: beanies, bonnets, scarves, jackets, boots and more. It is time to have fun in the snow.
Uggs of course are among the favorite footwear during this time. Next to it are knee high boots because your feet can get really cold when you go outside. The good thing about it is that there are trendy winter footwear to keep you looking stylish even during these gloomy days. Safety and being trendy is first and foremost so the next thing you go for is the clothes you wear. While it is okay to opt for something not too fashionably expensive, with the right fashion (more…)
Hats have been known to have taken many forms, shapes and sizes through time. The Greeks’ first hat was the feltpetasus, a hat with brim. Some parts of Europe during the middle ages wore peaked caps festooned with decorations. Meanwhile, Henry VIII was known to have favored the velvet and silk berets. Both men and women are undeniably fans of hats.
The Masculine Headwear
According to history, the purpose behind a headwear was protection. Perhaps as the style, the cut, design and colors evolved from the most basic head wear look, hats became a fashion trend. For men, hats are a wardrobe staple. Anywhere in the world, men wear different hats for different reasons including tradition, religious beliefs and of course as a fashion accessory. (more…)
No matter how many hair coverings and accessories you have, you always need more. A new color, a new style, something on sale, something because you’re hungry and trying to avoid the Ben and Jerry’s in the freezer. I can come up with any excuse for needing a new accessory, even though my tichel drawer is overflowing and I keep knocking over my hat and headband box and making a mess in my closet. So I got it in my head recently to count up how many tichels, headbands, etc., I have. And here are my results!
I realized recently that I throw around certain terms all the time, assuming that everyone who reads my posts knows what I’m talking about. But you all know what happens when you assume…so, I decided to post a handy-dandy list of hat and hair covering words that everyone should know, and I’ll also refer you to our ongoing glossary project as a reference. If I ever use a word that is unfamiliar, comment and I’ll explain!
Bandana – a square or triangular piece of cloth. Comes from the Hindi bandhana, which means “to tie.” Used around the head, around the neck, and wherever else you can think to put one!
Beret – a soft, round, brimless cap with a flat crown. Often made of wool.
Bucket hat – a soft hat (usually heavy cotton) with a wide, downward sloping brim. Bucket hats often have eyelets to let air circulate around the head when it’s hot. (more…)
Does it drive anyone else crazy to see people dressed all in black? Especially in the summer or at a wedding? I know it’s chic and slimming and whatever, but it’s also boring and depressing and hot!
Color psychology is the study of the effect that color has on mood, emotion, and even behavior. It’s sort of an alternative field of study used mostly by marketing and advertising departments and interior designers. According to experts, black does evoke style, power, and mystery – but it is also associated with death, formality, fear, evil, sadness, anger, and remorse. Too much black is overwhelming!Since today is the first day of summer, I feel obliged to point out that black absorbs heat more than any other color – and to better spot bugs, it is recommended that you wear light-colored clothing. Just something to keep in mind!
I don’t know about you, but if I don’t get out every day, I’ll crack up. I don’t mind rain, I don’t mind snow, I don’t mind heat; what I need is fresh air! And if I can find something enjoyable – or necessary – to do outside rather than inside, I’ll do it. So grab a hat and join me this weekend at one of the following fun outdoor activities!
Do your grocery shopping at a farmer’s market instead of a supermarket. You’ll get better fruits and vegetables for cheaper, and you never know what other funky products you’ll come across!
Hit a festival on the weekend; there are all kinds of hobby and craft events going on in the spring and summer, plus state and county fairs and so on. My personal favorite is a Renaissance Faire; you’ll see people wearing all kinds of cool costumes, so feel free to dress however you want – a Crocheted Snood will fit right in and even be somewhat historically accurate!
I know Earth Day was last week, but finding different ways to be “green” is a pretty hot topic these days anyway. There are a lot of simple ways to be kind to the environment – using cloth shopping bags (they look so much nicer, and hold so much more, than plastic), taking metal or plastic water bottles and travel coffee mugs, feeding your leftover bread scraps to the ducks instead of throwing them out. Ok, I’m not sure if the last one exactly counts as being “green,” but it’s more fun and less wasteful, isn’t it?
Fun With Bandanas
So, in honor of Earth Day, and in keeping with our own theme, here are some interesting ways to reuse a bandana that you might not have thought of before.
