spring hatSome of us have experienced a touch of warmer weather recently, and are starting to think towards next season’s styles.  And if you’re still surrounded by snow and ice, you might want to think spring anyway – it will get to you eventually!  Here’s a rundown of some of this spring’s fashion and accessory trends, from sources like Vogue, Glamour, and Women’s Wear Daily.

  • Mixing different prints.  If you keep them in the same color family, wearing more than one pattern can look totally cool.  A floral scarf or headband will let you ease into this look, if you can coordinate it with a top or dress. (more…)

All the Awesome Hair Clips

hair clips hairbowsWhether your hair is long or short, layered or single length, curly or straight, thick or thin, there is a hair clip for you.  Even if you cover full time with a scarf or wig, you can still use clips, both for function and fun.  Hair clips (also known as barrettes, hair slides, hair clasps, or hair pins – depending where you’re from), are great for keeping hair out of eyes (especially growing-out bangs!), for holding part- or full-ponytails in place, and for decorating otherwise simple hairstyles.  Here’s a rundown of the most common styles and who/what they are good for.

  • Bobby pins were invented in the 1920′s because short hairstyles – bobs – were in fashion for the first time, and women needed new ways to keep them in place.  Someone took the u-shaped hair pin, which is great for keeping buns and other heavy styles in place, and flattened it out, so that it would work for smaller pieces of hair.   (more…)

Female Pattern Baldness – What You Must Know

hair mirrorThe basic life-cycle of a hair is that it grows about half an inch per month for 2 to 6 years, rests for a while, then falls out.  At any given time, about 85% of your hair is growing and 15% is resting.  Baldness is when hair falls out, but nothing grows in its place.

Female pattern baldness isn’t exactly like the male version.  Instead of the classic receding hairline, women tend to lose hair from the top of their heads – a center parting becomes gradually wider.  And they rarely lose as much as men; women experience general thinning, but they still have hair.  It is caused by changes in the level of certain hormones.
